4 Highly Engaging Ways to Build Reading Fluency in Young Learners

It is so difficult to hear a child struggling while reading aloud! But it is all part of the process of learning how to read fluently.  Scroll down to hear about ideas that will speed up that process...

  • Reread passages multiple times
Have your kiddos read the same passage 2-3 times. This will build speed, accuracy, and confidence through being more familiar with the passage every time it is read. This is actually super fun. As a parent, I would read the short passage first, and then have my kiddo read it the second time. Of course, the passage has to be relevant and interesting to the learner! Look for a workbook that contains high interest passages or look at teacher marketplaces which have a wealth of these. The free passages on this page are a perfect place to start.

  • Practice echo reading
This idea breaks it down even further, for those littles who need even more help. The teacher or parent reads a sentence or passage with natural expression, and then the child "echoes" it back. This is also great for modeling tone and pacing.

  • Try choral reading
The group reads a text together aloud. If homeschooling, it can be the parent and child reading together. This reduces pressure on students and encourages a steady, fluent pace. This is an idea to use every now and then, or for passages that are not too long, or else your learners will experience "choral reading fatigue".

  • Have some fun with reader’s theater
In this scenario, students perform a script by reading their parts aloud. It improves fluency through practice without the need to memorize parts. There are so many reader's theater scripts available on teacher marketplaces such as TPT. This is an ideal way to improve fluency for both classrooms and homeschool groups. Definitely something to try.

Remember the most important element to help your young ones build their reading fluency is to READ EVERY DAY! Do this and I can assure you they will improve and grow to love reading, which is, after all, our goal in the first place!
